Cloughie opened the door dressed in his famous green sweater, baggy grey tracksuit bottoms finished of with a pair of short Wellington boots.

“Ah, welcome John and come in,” he said to Chairman Curry. Then, looking at me, he said, “You can piss off.” What a put down. I was put in my place good and proper.

Brian Clough could be a plausible sort when he wanted to be, but he had a huge ego, as well as an antagonistic attitude to those he could not abide. He justified his ego with his reputation as a goalscorer, which he made sure went before him.

Later in his football life Brian pronounced that moving from Middlesbrough to Sunderland was “like moving from Butlins to Belsen”.
