Leeds United - the good and the bad

It was common belief within the game at that time that Leeds under Don Revie were imbued on the training ground with the will and ability to ‘look after themselves’ on a football field. Well, we were up for the fight.

The hatred which had developed between Don Revie and Alan Brown spilled over into the dressing rooms. As we departed the changing room all the Sunderland team were scuffing their feet on the rough concrete floor to expose the nails through the leather stud further. Leeds’s players were doing the same. What followed over the ninety minutes was open warfare between two sets of highly charged and passionate teams. The aftermath of a 1-1 draw was gruesome.

As manager of Hartlepool I rang manager Don Revie of Leeds United and asked could he help us out by giving us some training kit. Within an hour of arriving at Leeds we were back in the car driving back up the A1 with a boot full of training kit and a back seat piled high with the white shirts of Leeds United.
